Ukulele Strings

When asking ukulele players about which strings are best you’ll get as wide verity of opinions as there are ukulele styles. So we are not even going to try and say which are best but here are some of the string we’ve used in the studio with very good results.

After changing ukulele strings there is that stretch in period when they don’t want to stay in tune, but it is worth the hassle to keep fresh strings on your ukulele.

Choosing High G String Or A Low G String

Intonation on a string instrument refers to the relative pitch across the strings and fret board. If an instrument’s intonation is not correct, it will be in tune at one neck position and out of tune at another. With its short neck and very short string length, achieving perfect intonation on an ukulele is difficult, but not impossible.  The first sign of a well constructed instrument is good intonation. This doesn’t guarantee that it will sound great but at least it will be in tune with other instruments. Inexpensive ukuleles typically have intonation problems. This may be caused by incorrect fret spacing, a saddle that is placed too high, a nut that is placed too high, or a misplaced bridge. There are exceptions, however. We’ve tested several Applause tenors which sell for under $400 that had excellent intonation.  To check the intonation on your ukulele while using an electronic tuner, tune each string and then check the tuning again at the 12th fret. Unless you’re testing a high end ukulele, you’ll most likely discover that it’s not perfect, but it should be close.
